"How can I help other people achieve their greatness? "
Stewardship. It is synonymous with Leadership. A steward by definition is a person who serves others. That is a fundamental part of being a leader. A great leader isn't just one who bosses people around. A mark of a great leader is his or her ability to lead people. To lead others to realize their own awesomeness.
An example of a leader who is also a steward. Take this woman, ShiYeon Sung. She is a rather famous and successful rising conductor from South Korea. She is quickly gaining fame and popularity internationally. What stood out to me was that she was a female conductor making headway in a male-dominated field. She, being such a phenomenal leader, even got her own title: Associate Conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. ShiYeon Sung leads others, individual musicians in this case, to achieve greatness as an orchestra. On their own these musicians cannot create great symphonies of music. En mass but leaderless an orchestra may only produce unorganized sound or mediocre music at best. Each musician cannot contribute his or her greatest level of musicianship if he or she is fighting to be heard, is fighting blindly, lead by his or her personal metronome. The job of the conductor is to give direction and guidance for all the musicians, beyond that of the notes on the paper. ShiYeon Sung provides an interpretation, a constructive and creative channel for the others to follow if they wish. Provided with an end goal the musicians are then free to focus on the music. This is how ShiYeon Sung is a steward and a leader. | |
